A Story Accompanying Each Label
Diego & Stefano Conterno, Father & Son / Owners / Winemakers
Diego Conterno is the cousin of Claudio Conterno, who along with Guido Fantino, collaborated to establish the highly-recognised and respected Fantino Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba of Barolo. In 2000, Diego decided to strike it out on his own to express the story of each grape that reflects the essence of the land. With vineyards he already owned and grapes that used to be bottled under his cousin’s label, Diego, together with his son Stefano produced their first vintage in 2003. The Monforte region usually produces wines that are the strongest in tannins and structure, lasting for many years. Diego’s wines offer a fresh and less frequently seen look at how Monforte’s terroir can provide wines of powerful aromatics, but yet with finesse and a delicate touch that is least expected. Each wine (except Ginestra) has a label illustrating the story of two star-crossed lovers enjoying wines throughout their courtship. The complete story and the tone of each scene is understood when the bottles are placed side by side and tasted in a specific order. With this, Diego is able to skilfully weave the story of each grape and its terroir (calcareous marl & clay) into a light-hearted narrative, for the pleasure of his drinkers.
